Aobut SSRI's

"Vancouver's growing interest in avant-noize was signalled early with the release of the SSRIs' debut EP, Prescribing…, in 2007, and this second effort finds the quartet in full, cocky-experimental bloom. It also commemorates the very untimely death last July of drummer Tommy Milburn, who was the perfect young man for the job, judging from the five operatically out-there tracks on Teems.

On opener “Honest”, Milburn puts Bonham-sized boom-boom behind Joseph Hirabayashi's duelling “Music Box Dancer” piano and buzzing synths, which would be grossly inappropriate if it all weren't so arresting and hooky. “Parade” applies stubbornly atonal verses and sudden bursts of rat-a-tat violence to a more straightforward backbeat, and the winding “Domino Domino” seduces the listener with a long, sedating intro that actually verges on pretty. Not that the band doesn't take the opportunity to bash your head in again for a few seconds here and there, with cymbal violence, chanting, and an excursion into junior Sabbath on the way out.

Teems is accomplished and thoughtful in a field where quality can be submerged in indulgent amateurishness, and it's a fine tribute to a lost pal. Best of all is that the SSRIs are offering the whole gleeful racket for no money down at www.thessris.com/."

About The Pack A.D.

WHAT THE PRESS HAS TO SAY...

Live, Millers sparse beats shuffle along while Black goes from a whisper to a wail tearing out shards of spiky lead guitar. It's explosive, organic and really different each time…Nothing on Tintype is ever less than intense and rarely cheery. --Stuart Derdeyn (The Province) DEC 07

Maya Millers drumming isn't just confident, it's downright warlike --Fish Griwkowsky (Edmonton Sun) JAN 08

A guitar-drum howling-blues duo, Becky Black and Maya Miller of the Pack are clearly meant to play together...The whole beautiful mess (of Tintype) will have uptown turkeys running in terror back to their Eric Clapton "blues" CDs. --Adrian Mack (The Georgia Straight) AUG 07

Some say that Black's guitar pick is actually the Devil's toenail. We don't know where The Pack got their dark gifts, we're just trying to stay on their good side. --Claire Kenny (Urban Trendz) MAR 07
