SGFMS presents WHITEHORSE

Port Arthur Polish Alliance Hall 102 Court St S, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada

Since their debut in 2011, Toronto’s Whitehorse has evolved from magnetic folk duo to full-blown rock band. In truth, Whitehorse is never fully either one or the other, but an ever-evolving creative partnership between Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet. As five consecutive JUNO nominations in four categories attest, whether it be a holiday album or reworked blues covers or pop noir album, Whitehorse rises to every challenge with guitar wizardry and magnetic harmonies.
With The Northern South Vol. 2, Whitehorse returned to their JUNO Blues Album of the Year nominated project, which reimagines the early days of electric blues. For thesecond instalment, The Northern South Vol. 2 deals 1950s blues bops, sexed-up cuts and hellfire gospels to meld the grooves and melodies of the original selections with the band’s steamy, swampy, squalling approach. Both snapshot and slingshot, with an eye on the end-of-days and Whitehorse’s ear for blues grooves, The Northern South Vol. 2 expanded the universe of the Northern South with foreplay, foreboding, fever and Fenders -- plenty of them -- on cuts from Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, Jimmy Reed, Slim Harpo and more

SGFMS presents AVERY RAQUEL

Port Arthur Polish Alliance Hall 102 Court St S, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada

From recording artist to radio co-host, busy Canadian singer/songwriter, and Billboard charting artist Avery Raquel has been entertaining audiences professionally for over 10 years. She’s released 3 solo albums to critical acclaim and airplay across the country and is now prepping for her self-titled fourth release in 2022.
This new project of all original Alternative Soul is reminiscent of, and her love for RnB/Soul music of the past, but with a more current, contemporary style. Influenced by artists such as Etta James, Carole King, Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill, Bruno Major, Allen Stone, and so many others, Avery’s created, on this new collection of personal, yet relatable songs, a soulful fun mix of RnB/Soul and Pop, with a flavour of her Jazz, and Blues experiences.
And at the age of 20, Avery isn’t new to songwriting either. In late 2018, Avery Raquel released her 3rd solo album, ‘My Heart Away’, which was comprised of all original music, written by the accomplished and maturing artist. The music achieved media exposure and radio across the country and into the US and even Europe. The album debuted at #11 on the Canadian iTunes Top 200 RnB/Soul chart.
From Toronto to Montreal, New York to Newport and beyond, including performing arts centres, renowned music festivals, club-style venues, and corporate events, Avery continues to wow ever-growing audiences with her fresh style and powerful vocal performances.

SGFMS presents THE ANDREW COLLINS TRIO

Port Arthur Polish Alliance Hall 102 Court St S, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada

Mando maestro Andrew Collins finds himself – through no actual fault of his own – at the epicentre of Canada’s burgeoning acoustic/roots music scene. He didn’t invent it – but he's certainly been a contributor, having co-founded seriously noteworthy Canadian bands like the Creaking Tree String Quartet, the Foggy Hogtown Boys and, more recently, his namesake Trio. That’s not to mention the fact that this prolific, robust performer – comfortable on mandolin, fiddle, guitar, mandola and mandocello – composes, produces, arranges, writes and teaches across multiple genres, including a popular collision of folk, jazz, bluegrass, celtic, and classical.

As Collins gathers up innumerable JUNO nominations (5) and Canadian Folk Music Awards (7) won by his various ensembles, he’s zeroing in on the work he does with Trio-mates: fellow string guru Mike Mezzatesta, whose versatility shines through on guitar, mandolin, fiddle and mandola, and in-the-pocket James McEleney holding it down on the bass, mandocello and vocals. Showcasing a dizzying number of styles and instruments on stage, Collins and Co. appear to live by the old adage, “idle hands are the devil’s workshop”, likely keeping them just ahead of his grasp. Bending and blending genres, these musical shape shifters land somewhere between the re-imagined worlds of Béla Fleck and Newgrass invader, David Grisman.
They just released a new double album, grafting 11 vocal cuts (tongues) to 11 instrumentals (grooves) to create a seamless finish with their cleverly monikered double album, Tongue & Groove. Each cut is milled to perfection and represents a back-to-basics visitation on what the band does best -- spontaneity of the stage and rapid-fire, improvisational exchanges.

All attendees must adhere to TBDHU COVID -19 regulations and our COVID Policies
